Épines dorsales (Total) : 14 - 16; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 8 - 10; Épines anales: 2; Rayons mous anaux: 16 - 18. This thick-bodied species is characterized by the following: large eye; no enlarged scale in pectoral axil; a prominent brown network outlining scales on the lower sides the body; lacking horizontal brown lines (Ref. 93281).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated; Cross section: oval.
Eggs are hemispherical and covered with numerous sticky threads that anchor them in the algae on the nesting sites (Ref. 240). Larvae are planktonic which occur primarily in shallow, nearshore waters (Ref. 94114).
