Etymology: Astyanax: The name of Astyanax, Hector´s son in the Greek mythology (Ref. 45335); pirabitira: The specific name pirabitira is from Tupi-Guarani. It means mountain fish (pira, meaning fish, and
ybytyra meaning mountain) in reference to the occurrence of the species in altitudes higher than 800 m.
Eponymy: Astyanax was the son of Hector in Greek mythology. See Homer’s Iliad for details. The reasoning for its use for a genus of characins is not explained. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 10 - 11; Vertèbres: 35 - 38. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: body depth 27.1-34.0% of standard length; interorbital width 22.2-28.7% of head length; head depth 72.9-97.0% of HL; 15-20 branched rays on anal fin; 37-40 lateral line scales; one or two maxillary teeth; two humeral spots; and absence of bony hooks in the anal fin of males (Ref. 94017).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
Occurs in streams and rivers, inhabiting lotic shallow areas (up to 1 m deep) with clear water and bottom composed of gravel and stones, at altitudes from 800 to 1200 m above sea level. Syntopic with Astyanax brachypterygium, ustraloheros sp., Cnesterodon brevirostratus, Eurycheilichthys sp., Jenynsia eirmostigma, Pareiorhaphis hystrix, Rhamdia sp., and Trichomycterus tropeiro (Ref. 94017).
