Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible; sodwanaensis: Named for its type locality, Sodwana Bay (an adjective), plus the Latin suffix ensis denoting locality of occurrence,.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: complete cephalic sensory-pore system (pattern 1); 15 pectoral-fin rays, 9-14 are branched; dorsal/anal fin-ray formula, 8/7; short fifth pelvic-fin ray, 20% of 4th ray; with a dark occipital spot and a dark spot on preural centrum; orange (not dark) spots on pectoral-fin base 2, the upper one twice size of lower; first dorsal and anal fins are black; second dorsal fin dark (Ref. 111251).
