Etymology: Crenicichla: Latin, crenulatus = cut, clipped + Greek, kichle = wrasse (Ref. 45335); tuca: The specific name tuca is a Guaraní word (tucá), meaning toucan (Ramphastos) in reference to the similarly enlarged lips/beak.

All specimens, except two, were collected in the main channel of the Iguazú River, where they occurred as single individuals among the rocks from the walkways over the river ramming their heads and thick lips against the rock surfaces (Ref. 104794).
