Etymology: Dipturus: Greek, di = two + Greek, pteryx = fin (Ref. 45335); lamillai: Named for Julio Lamilla, a Chilean biologist who devoted his life to teaching and research primarily on the biology and conservation of chondrichthyans, especially batoids.
Eponymy: Professor Dr Julio Lamilla Gómez (d: 2016) was a Chillean research biologist and teacher at the Faculty of Sciences and of the Institute of Marine and Limnological Sciences at the Universidad Austral de Chile (1979–2011) where he was awarded his MSc [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species is considered as a junior synonym of Zearaja brevicaudata (Marini,
