Etymology: Oneirodes: Greek, 'oneiros' = a dream or dreamlike or out of a dream (suggesting this fish is so strange and marvelous that can exist only in dreams) (Ref. 86949); sanjeevani: Named for V. N. Sanjeevan, former Director of the Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE).

This species is distinguished by the following characters: with a simple, long, laterally compressed, posterior escal appendage; a relatively short illicium; subopercle short and broad, ventral margin nearly circular; escal appendage morphology with anterior appendage
internally pigmented, a pair of unbranched, anterolateral appendages, the terminal papilla with a single distal spot of pigment, and a pair of fleshy, stout, medial appendages, each divided distally into two or three (on each side) short, slender filaments (Ref. 116652).
