Etymology: Plagiopsetta: Greek, plagios = oblique + Greek, psetta = grouper (Ref. 45335); biocellata: Name from Latin 'ocellatus’ for ocellate, and ‘bi’ for two, referring to the two ocelli in the posterior half of the body; treated as an adjective, with a feminine ending.

Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 61; Wervels: 42. This species is distinguished by the following characters: D 61, A 53, pectoral-fin rays on ocular side 8, caudal-fin rays 14; lateral-line scales on ocular side 74 while lateral line on blind side incomplete, with 14 scales; gill rakers on ocular side 2 + 4; vertebrae, abdominal 11 and caudal 31; a pair of large ocelli present on posterior body on ocular side; pectoral fin pale, with a distal black blotch (Ref. 122002).
Cross section: flattened.
A specimen was collected in the coral-reef lagoon of a fringing reef at a depth of less than 1 m (0-1 m), on coral gravel with scattered corals (Ref. 122002).
