Etymology: Characidium: Diminutive of Charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335)travassosi: Named for Haroldo Travassos, deceased Brazilian ichthyologist, in recognition to the contributions he made for the taxonomy of the genus Characidium (Ref. 128858).

This species can be distinguished from its congeners by having naked isthmus (except C. helmeri) with 15-18 principal caudal-fin rays (vs. 19 princial caudal-fin rays) and 10-12 total pectoral-fin rays (vs. 13 or more total pectoral-fin rays). It differs from C. helmeri by the following set of characters: having a slender body; tip of pectoral fin not reaching origin of pelvic fin; tip of pelvic fin not reaching beyond anus, presence of well developed supraorbital; vertically elongated dashes on sides of body absent; and higher number of pored lateral-line scales (Ref. 128858).
