Etymology: Pterophycis: Name from Latin 'pter' meaning fin and 'phycis' for a cod, referring to the diagnostic large pelvic fin of the genusspatium: Name from Latin 'spatium' meaning 'distance', referring to the clear gape between the anus and genital papilla, which is unique for the family.

This genus is distinguished by the following characters: with a ventral light organ; differs from all other genera in the family by having a genital papilla separated from anus by several small scales, a large pelvic fin with all rays elongated; snout broad and rounded, not shelf-like; palatines and vomer toothless; swimbladder with elongate projections that attached to openings at rear of the skull; pelvic-fin rays 7; first dorsal fin short-based, with 8 rays; second dorsal and anal fins long-based, with margins not indented (Ref. 121621).
