Etymology: Eptatretus: hepta (Gr.), seven; tretos (Gr.), perforated (i.e., with holes), referring to seven gill apertures on what would later be described as Homea banksii (=E. cirrhatus) [range within genus is 6-14 pairs of gill apertures] (See ETYFish); bahamensis: Named for its type locality, the Bahamas.

This species is distinguished from by the following characters: with five pairs of gill pouches and gill apertures which are well-spaced and arranged in a nearly straight line; branchial slime pores 4-5; prebranchial pores18; body depth 5.7% TL; trunk pores 47-49, total pores 82-85; nasal-sinus papillae 2; with a 3/2 multicusp pattern; total cusps 54 (Ref. 131344).
