Espinas dorsales (total) : 7; Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 9; Espinas anales: 3; Radios blandos anales: 5. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: 15 or 16 (mode 16) pectoral-fin rays; 22 or 23 (23) pored lateral-line scales; 44-46 (45) scale rows in longitudinal series; 5 or 6 (5) scale rows above lateral line; 10 or 11 (11) scale rows below lateral line; 5 or 6 (6) scale rows between sixth dorsal fin spine base and lateral line, 5 or 6 (5) scale rows between last dorsal-fin spine base and lateral line; 4 or 5 (4) predorsal scale rows; 14-16 (14) gill rakers; anterior and posterior lacrimal spines simple, no accessory spines; lateral lacrimal ridge and spine absent; first and second suborbital ridges fused, forming a single ridge terminating in a single suborbital spine; presence of palatine teeth; upper-jaw teeth villiform, with canine-like teeth anteriorly; lower-jaw teeth villiform, with canine-like teeth (less pronounced in smaller specimens) well distributed and extending to posterior region; body scales predominantly cycloid (rarely with weak ctenii; absence of scales on space between upper and lower opercular spines; poorly developed interorbital ridges, a shallow channel between ridges; absence of coronal spines (Ref. 133096).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal; Cross section: oval.
This species dwells in shallow coral and rocky reef environments, commonly found in subtropical and tropical island ecosystems (Ref. 133096).
