Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 9 - 10; Anale zachte stralen: 14 - 16; Wervels: 30 - 31. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: distal margin of the unpaired fins and pelvic-fin orangish-red in males; distinctive dark marks on the humeral region absent; scales in the transversal series 10-11; pectoral fin rays 13; pelvic-fin length 10.3-11.6% SL; head length 27.8-30.5% SL; head width in females 75.0-80.6%; caudal-fin length in males 29.9-33.6% and 30.6-32.1% SL in females; red oblique bars in the caudal fin in males present; eye diameter 28.8-32.3% HL; body depth 22.0-23.1% SL; pre-pelvic length 52.8-55.7% SL (Ref. 133473).

The species inhabits stream bank and adjacent shallow pools, with clear, still water, over muddy and clay substrates. It is present in both sunlit areas and those shaded by vegetation, particularly by buriti palms (Mauritia flexuosa) (Ref. 133473).
