Etymology: Hypostomus: Greek, hypo = under + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335); caudofasciatus: Name 'caudofasciatus' from the Latin words 'cauda' and 'fasciatus', meaning 'tail' and 'stripes', in reference to the longitudinal dark stripes on its caudal fin.

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: caudal fin with longitudinal dark stripes on yellow background; horizontally aligned stripes on lateral series of plates; upper-jaw teeth 21-39; straight dentary tooth rows; lacking keels on lateral series of plates; orbital diameter of 20.7-25.0% Hl (Ref. 133475).

Facultative air-breathing in the genus; This species is found in small to medium-sized streams 0.3-5 m. deep, with substrate composed of sand, clay, and loose gravel, and sometimes pebbles and boulders (Ref. 133475).
