Etymology: Cambeva: Probably derived from the Tupi-Guarani, is a popular name for trichomycterid fishes in southern and south-eastern Brazil (Ref. 119381); podostemophila: Name 'podostemophila' from the contraction of Podostemon, the genus its associated with, plus the Greek suffix 'phila', used to express attraction for something.

Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 11; Anale zachte stralen: 9. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: loss of pelvic fins and girdle; ten branchiostegal rays; six pectoral-fin rays; dorsal procurrent caudal-fin rays 13 or 14; filament on the extremity of the first pectoral-fin ray absent; anterior segment of the infraorbital latero-sensory canal absent; ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays 10 or 11; vertebrae 37; odontodes 12 opercular, 20-24 interopercular (Ref. 137687).
