Etymology: Leporinus: Latin, lepus, leporis = rabbit (Ref. 45335); oliveirai: Name 'oliveirai' in honor of Nogueira da Silva, for his intensive work on introducing fishes bred and raised in captivity into the International Aquarium trade.

Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 10; Rayons mous anaux: 8. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: three unicuspid teeth on the premaxilla and four on the dentary; 12 circumpeduncular scale series; dark blotches on the trunk; large round dark blotches over the body; pattern of dark blotches on the body in adults including one large midlateral blotch below posterior dorsal-fin base that is isolated from neighboring midlateral blotches by a wide gap; 1-2 large blotches in region ventral to the lateral line between the pectoral and pelvic fins (Ref. 137758).
