Etymology: Protocobitis: Greek, protos = the first + Greek, kobitis, -idos = a kind of sardine; also related with the voice Greek, kobios, Latin gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); longicostatus: Name 'longicostatus' from the English words 'long' and 'constate', in reference to the longer ribs found in the new species compared to other species within Protocobitis.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: long costate; whole body covered by scales except head; 12 branched caudal fins rays; lateral head length 18.5-22.5% of SL; deepest body depth 8.5-13.2% of SL; head width 6.2-6.5% of SL, head height 45.7-49.5% of lateral head length, caudal peduncle height 37.8-58.5% of length (Ref. 137844).
