Etymology: Profundulus:Latin, profundus = deep (Ref. 45335); hectori:Name 'hectori' in honor of Mexican ichthyologist Hector Espinosa Perez for his contributions to the study and conservation of freshwater fishes in Mexico.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: presence of a small mesethmoid, crescent-shaped, that does not extend beyond the margin of the vomer; large autopterotic fossa; presence of humeral spot; presence of a set of large black spots on the scales on the sides of the body; set of black spots are equal to or greater than 50% of the diameter of the pupil; scales on the lateral line 30-33; predorsal scales 18-24; origin of the dorsal fin positioned at a vertical line slightly anterior to the origin of the anal fin; neural and hemal spines of the preural centra 2; and lacrimal bone has a lateral extension of round or blunt shape (Ref. 137880). This species inhabits streams with a substrate of pebbles, sand, and Sabino roots, and bordered by riparian vegetation consisting of scrubland and herbaceous banks (Ref. 137880).
