Etymology: Priocharax: Greek, prio = to saw + Greek, charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335); robbiei: Name 'robbiei' in honor of Roberto 'Robbie' Taliaferro Mattox Jr., the father of the author, who passed away while G.M.T.M (one of the authors) was in the field collecting the type series.

背的軟條 (總數) : 7 - 9; 臀鰭軟條: 20 - 28; 脊椎骨: 32 - 34. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: claustrum absent; two postcleithra; number of branched anal-fin rays 20-28, mode 25; five branched pelvic-fin rays; adipose fin absent; and a round flap of skin between contralateral pelvic-fins bases absent (Ref. 137885).
