Etymology: Priocharax: Greek, prio = to saw + Greek, charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335); piagassu: Name 'piagassu' from the indigenous language Nheengatu words 'piá' and 'wa’su', meaning 'heart' and 'big', in allusion to the region in the middle of the Amazon basin where the type series were collected.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: claustrum absent; infraorbitals 2 + 3 present; a single postcleithrum present; five branched pelvic-fin rays present; adipose fin absent; and a round flap of skin between contralateral pelvic-fins bases absent (Ref. 137886).
