Etymology: Grasseichthys: Greek, grassos, -ou = stink, dirt + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335); zamba: Name 'zamba' from the Lingala word meaning 'forest or wooded area', in reference to the forested stream habitat of the new species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: higher number of vertebrae 39-40* (20* precaudal +19-20* caudal); fusion of caudal-fin hypurals 4 +5; pectoral fin 12.3%-13.7% SL; pelvic fin 10%-11.1% SL; caudal fin 18.8%-20.3% SL; head 40%-42.3% HL; eye diameter 35.5%-38.5% HL; and snout 23.1%-25.9% HL (Ref. 138392).
