Etymology: Stemonosudis: Greek, stemon, -onos = warp, weft + Latin, sudis = esox, fish of the Rhine, cited by Plinius 9.15; it also means "stake" (Ref. 45335); fumea: Name 'fumea' from the Latin word meaning 'smoky', in reference to the grayish coloration of large adults of the new species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: D 8-9; A 34-36; 91-94 total vertebrae; 10-12 peritoneal pigment sections; 6 saddle-like patches on dorsum anterior to DFO; second dorsal saddle-like patch between dorsal and dorsal adipose fins located far posterior to vertical line through AFO; head depth 4.6-5.0% SL; snout length 10.0-11.3% SL; upper-jaw length 8.3-10.5% SL; lower-jaw length 11.2-13.9% SL; DFO located slightly posterior to mid-point of V-A, predorsal length 71.1-73.0% SL, D-A 6.8-8.5% SL, V-D 55.0-59.5% V-A; well-developed gill rakers on epibranchial, ceratobranchial and hypobranchial of first and second gill arches (only weakly developed in 78.7-107.7 mm-SL juveniles) (Ref. 138393).
