Etymology: Pollimyrus: Because of Dr. Max Poll, ichthyologist + Greek, myros, -ou = the male of the morey eel; vanneer: Named after Professor Dr. Wim Van Neer (1954–) (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels, and KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium) for his contributions to ichthyoarchaeology in Europe and northern Africa.

Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 21 - 24; Anale zachte stralen: 24 - 27; Wervels: 41 - 43. This species is distinguished by the following characters: caudal peduncle thick, 20.3%-24.4% BD; pectoral fins rounded; body shallow, 22.6%-28.7% SL; preanal distance short, 52.4%-58.8% SL; vertebrae 41-43; D 21-24; snout long, 15.3%-21.0% HL; eye small 13.7%-21.6% HL; dorsal fin long, 22.1%- 25.1% SL (Ref. 138541).

Collected from the type locality with the following physicochemical parameters: water temperature about 27.7C in the afternoon; pH 7.8; oxygen level 6.8 mg/L; ammonium concentration 0.1 mg/L; nitrites concentration 0.05 mg/L; silicium concentration 1 mg/L; calcium concentration 18–26 ppm; and phosphate level 0.25 mg/L (Ref. 138541).
