Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817); magnarostrum: Name 'magnarostrum' from the Latin word 'magna' and 'rostrum', meaning 'large' and 'snout', in reference to the large snout of the new species. A noun in apposition.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: absence many small and budding tubercles on the ventral side of the transverse lobe of the snout; a multilobed proboscis on the snout; a long head (27.9% SL); a long snout (63% HL); small eye (13% HL); deep caudal peduncle (14.7% SL); short gular disc (34% HL); 14½ branched pectoral-fin rays; 33 lateral line scales; 11 predorsal scales; and 13 circumpeduncular scales and presence of multicuspid tubercles on the snout (Ref. 138504).
