Etymology: Sternopygus: Greek, sternon = sternon, + Greek, pyge = tail (Ref. 45335); embera: Name 'embera' in honor of Emberá, an Indigenous group native to the type locality of the new species.

Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 208 - 272. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: distal tip of the second parapophysis of the Weberian apparatus extending more laterally than the fourth parapophysis in dorsal and ventral view; head length 10.9-14%; a convex anterior margin of the neurocranium in adult specimens; ascending endopterygoid process nearly vertical along its ontogeny; complete lack of a humeral spot; lack of any pigmented bars or saddles in its ontogeny; precaudal vertebrae 22-23; and the presence of 11-16 endopterygoid teeth (Ref. 138572).
