Etymology: Eigenmannia: From Eigenmann, 1910, researcher of faunistic studies (Ref. 45335); dutrai: Named for Guilherme M. Dutra, for his contribution to the field of ichthyology, in particular to the taxonomy of Eigenmannia.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: presence of superior midlateral stripe; subterminal mouth; depth of posterodorsal expansion on infraorbitals 1 + 2 and approximately equal TL of infraorbitals 1 + 2; dentary teeth 35-36; premaxillary teeth 23-29; scale rows above LL 12-15; coronomeckelian bone that corresponds to 25% of length of Meckel's cartilage; origin of the superior midlateral stripe at vertical between the bases of 18th and 30th anal-fin rays; anterior displaced haemal spine, slightly cylindrical; precaudal vertebrae, 14-16; pectoral-fin rays,
