Etymology: Pomacentrus: Greek, poma, -atos = cover, operculum + Greek, kentron = sting (Ref. 45335); mandacani: Name 'mandacani' in honor of His Excellency Dominggus Mandacan, for his vision and leadership in designating West Papua as the world’s first Conservation Province and pledging protection for 70% of its forests and 50% of its marine ecosystems, including Cendrawasih Bay where this species occurs exclusively.

خارهاي باله پشتي (کل) : 13; شعاع نرم باله پشتي (کل) : 13 - 15; خارهاي باله مخرجي: 2; شعاع نرم باله مخرجي: 14 - 15; مهره ها: 26. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: dorsal-fin elements usually XIII,13-15 (usually 13 or 14); anal-fin elements II, 14-15; pectoral rays 17-19 (rarely 19); tubed lateral-line scales 15-18; total gill rakers on first arch 19-22; body depth 1.9-2.2 (mean 2.0) in SL; scales absent on preorbital and suborbital; lower margin of suborbital series with 2-11 serrae; colour of adult in life brown on back, mainly white on side of body below lateral line, and bright blue lines dorsally on head; and dorsal fin brown, caudal fin whitish to translucent, anal fin white with brown anterior margin, and pelvic fins pale brownish (Ref. 138626).
