Etymology: Valenciennea: From Achille Valenciennes 1794-1865; he worked with Duméril, Cuvier and Lacepède since 1815; malacologist, author of a "Histoire naturelle des poissons" (Ref. 45335); papuensis: Name 'papuensis' from the type locality of the new species, West Papua Province.

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 13; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 12; Vertebrae: 26. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: dorsal-fin rays VI + I,12-13 (usually 13); anal rays I,12; pectoral rays 19-20; lateral scales 67-74; transverse scales (upward and backward from anal-fin origin) 17-20; gill rakers on outer face of first arch 3-4; gill rakers on inner face of second arch 11; first dorsal fin low and rounded in profile; caudal fin rhomboidal with central rays longest, 3.8 (3.2-3.7) in SL; pair of dark stripes at eye level on head and body, and orange stripe on middle of side from snout to caudal fin base, contacting lower edge of eye; and size small, maximum about 50-60 mm SL (Ref. 138626).
