Etymology: Pareiorhina:Greek, pareia = jaw + Greek, rhinos = nose (Ref. 45335); isabelae:Name 'isabelae' in honor of Isabel Cristina de Azevedo Santos, mother of VMA-S, who first introduced him to fishing and provided essential logistical support during the collection of the new species.
This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: presence of a postdorsal ridge; postdorsal ridge plates (11-16, modally 12 vs. 8-11, modally 9); absence of keels on dorsal and mid-dorsal series of plates; dorsal profile of the head rounded; premaxillary (47-73); unicuspid teeth; dentary (42-78); snout profile rounded, snout tip naked; single fenestra on the anterior portion of pelvic girdle; vertebrae (31 vs. 29); absence of a cluster of abdominal platelets between the pelvic fins; tip of pectoral-fin spine reaching the second third of dorsal-fin base when adpressed; absence of dark spots over dorsal and lateral surfaces of head, body and fins; posterior margin of lower lip fringed; and five infraorbitals (Ref. 138661).
