Etymology: Pareiorhina: Greek, pareia = jaw + Greek, rhinos = nose (Ref. 45335)mystica: Name 'mystica' in reference to the cultural traditions and beliefs involving mysticism and esotericism of the type locality of the new species, city of Sao Thomé das Letras.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: presence of a postdorsal ridge; unicuspid teeth; absence of keels on dorsal and mid-dorsal series of plates; two fenestrae on the anterior portion of pelvic girdle; dorsal profile of the snout elliptical; tip of the snout naked; head (87.6%99.0% HL); absence of a cluster of abdominal platelets between pelvic fins; absence of dark spots over dorsal and lateral surfaces of head, body and fins; posterior margin of lower lip fringed; tip of pectoral-fin spine reaching the second third of dorsal-fin base when adpressed; mandibular ramus (12.7%-18.4% HL); and 30 total vertebrae (Ref. 138661).
