This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: presence of a postdorsal ridge; unicuspid teeth; absence of keels on dorsal and mid-dorsal series of plates; two fenestrae on the anterior portion of pelvic girdle; dorsal profile of the snout elliptical; tip of the snout naked; head (87.6%99.0% HL); absence of a cluster of abdominal platelets between pelvic fins; absence of dark spots over dorsal and lateral surfaces of head, body and fins; posterior margin of lower lip fringed; tip of pectoral-fin spine reaching the second third of dorsal-fin base when adpressed; mandibular ramus (12.7%-18.4% HL); and 30 total vertebrae (Ref. 138661).
