Etymology: Moxostoma: Greek, myxo = to suckle + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335); carolina: Name 'carolina' from the Latin version of King Charles I of England’s name, Carolus, found written in Dr. Jenkins’ handwriting on his 11 May 2005 field data sheet (REJ 1980). A noun in apposition.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: circumpeduncle scales; deeply plicate lower lips; males with cephalic breeding tubercles; absence of dark and light stripes laterally along the body; lower lip angle generally less than 120º; males with cephalic breeding tubercles; embedded breast scales; interrupted supratemporal canal; unique mouth with cleft lower lip; and absence of a conspicuous black stripe on the lower lobe of the caudal fin (Ref. 138708).
