Etymology: Akysis: Derived from Greek, a = without + Greek, kysthos = bladder (Ref. 45335); poecilurus: Name 'poecilurus' from the Greek words meaning 'spotted' and 'tail', in reference to the hyaline spots on the proximal third of the caudal-fin lobes of the new species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: large hyaline spot on the proximal third of each caudal-fin lobe; interorbital distance (30-34% HL); pelvic fin just reaching anal-fin origin when adpressed (14-18% SL); absence of serrae on the posterior margin of the pectoral-fin spine; and color pattern of pale, irregular oblique bands that encircle a dark brown body (Ref. 138715)
