This species is distinguished by the following characters: D IX,11; A III,10; pectoral-fin rays 13; upper procurrent caudal-fin rays 6; lower procurrent caudal-fin rays 7-8; principal caudal-fin rays 8 + 7; circumpeduncular scales 18-20; body depth 3.7-4.2 in SL; head length 2.5-3.2 in SL; snout length 3.0-3.3 in HL; orbit diameter 3.4-5.8 in HL; orbit diameter 1.1-1.9 in snout length; caudal-peduncle length 1.9-3.3 in HL; pored lateral-line scales 25-28; scale rows above lateral line 3, below lateral line 9-10; total gill rakers 12-13. Colouration: head and anterior body grey to steely blue; head with a narrow dusky streak on cheek below eye, running from corner of mouth to edge of opercle; body with a median lateral black stripe from snout, passing through orbit to end of caudal fin (this stripe broadening towards posterior); posterior two thirds of body suffused with orange brown (including the median lateral black stripe); upper and lowermost edge of the caudal fin light blue to lilac; lower base of pectoral fin with a black elliptical spot (Ref. 138889).

Occurs in shallow coral reefs and syntopic with Labroides dimidiatus sensu lato and Labroides bicolor; with client fish Gymnothorax breedeni (Ref. 138889).
