The species is distinguished by the following characters: pectoral rays generally 15; medium body depth at anus (20-26% SL); scales in transverse forward series 11-13, Colouration: distinct colourful reddish pattern in mature male and a brownish poorly coloured pattern in female (Ref. 126456).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated; Cross section: oval.
This species is found mainly in the vegetation of ponds, lakes, swamps, and in the lower parts of rivers. It is omnivorous, feeding on filamentous algae, small crustaceans and aquatic insects. Observed in sympatry with G. caussei and G. margaritaceus (Ref. 126456),
