Etymology: Glyptothorax: Greek, glyptes = carver + Greek, thorax = breast (Ref. 45335); intonsus: Name 'intosus' from the Latin word meaning 'unshorn, unshaven, bearded', in reference to the long barbels of this species compared to most Mekong congeners.

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 1; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 6; Anale zachte stralen: 9 - 10. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: nasal barbels reaching at least to the anterior orbital margin; head width 16.8%-18.3% SL; head depth 11.6%-12.6% SL; lateral line without short branches visible; length of adipose-fin base 11.6%-13.8% SL; caudal peduncle depth 2.0-2.2 times in body depth at dorsal-fin origin; and a uniformly almost black body (Ref. 138879).
