This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: black median longitudinal stripe on the caudal fin present in juvenile specimens below about 40 mm SL; long pectoral-fin filament, its length about 40-60% of pectoral-fin length in specimens about 50 mm SL or larger; anterior infraorbital canal present, supported by an elliptical antorbital; a moderately deep opercular odontode patch; posterior margin of the metapterygoid, anterior margin of the hyomandibula anterior outgrowth and dorso-posterior margin of the quadrate slightly curved; and prominent projection on the lateral margin of the lateral ethmoid, ventrally overlapping the sesamoid supraorbital absent (Ref. 138853).
