Etymology: Liobagrus: Greek, leio = smooth + Mozarabic bagre, Greek, pagros = a kind of fish (Dentex sp.) (Ref. 45335); brevispina: Name 'brevispina' from the Latin word 'brevis' and 'spina', meaning 'short' and 'spine', in reference to the pectoral-fin spine of the new species extending short of the vertical though the dorsal-fin origin.
