Etymology: Malacanthus:Greek, mala = a lot + Greek, akantha = thorn (Ref. 45335). More on author: Lacepède.
Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and Kenya east to Hawaiian Islands, Fanning Islands and Samoa; northward to Japan south to Australia. Apparently not found off New Zealand (Ref. 8991). 印度-太平洋: 紅海，肯亞，莫三比克, 亞達伯拉與英哈卡島，模里西斯，斯里蘭卡，印尼，新幾內亞哥蒂河的高鹽分水域 , 美拉尼西亞, 向南只到新加勒多尼亞; 琉球, 菲律賓與麥克羅尼西亞的水域 , 帛琉,東至夏威夷群島，范寧島與美屬薩摩亞。 顯然地不發現外海的紐西蘭。 (參考文獻 8991) 記錄來自澳洲了。

Found on outer reef slopes, hovering above the bottom. They swim often high above the substrate to pick prey from the substrate with their excellent eyesight (Ref. 48635). They tend to swim away from its pursuer rather than enter its burrow (Ref. 1602). Solitary or in pairs (Ref. 9710), Monogamous and always in home-ranging pairs, that is they do not defend an exclusive territory (Refs. 52884, 37816). Maximum depth from Ref. 027115.
