Etymology: Apteronotus: Greek, apteros = without wings / (in this cases, fins) + Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); eschmeyeri: Named in honor of William N. Eschmeyer who greatly contributed to ichthyology with his 'Catalog of Fishes' (Ref. 50571).

Anale zachte stralen: 160 - 175; Wervels: 77. Blotchy coloration on body, clear band from chin to the beginning of the dorsal mid-sagittal electroreceptororgan, two clear bands surrounding caudal peduncle in specimens up to 16.5 cm TL, mouth rictus passing the posterior margin of orbit (Ref. 50571).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
