Etymology: Apteronotus: Greek, apteros = without wings / (in this cases, fins) + Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); eschmeyeri: Named in honor of William N. Eschmeyer who greatly contributed to ichthyology with his 'Catalog of Fishes' (Ref. 50571).
