Etymology: Sturisomatichthys: German, sturio = sturgeon, 1525 + Greek, soma = body + greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335); guaitipan: Species epithet 'guaitipan' named after Gaitana, an indigenous heroine from the 16th century, who occupied the Colombian Andes in the upper Magdalena valley (Ref. 132346).
Eponymy: Guaitipan (also known as Gaitana) was cacique (leader) of the Timaná tribe, who occupied the Colombian Andes in the upper Magdalena valley of the Meta department of Colombia (where this catfish occurs). [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
