Etymology: Odontoscion: Greek, odous = teeth + Greek, skion, skiaina = barbel, red mullet (Ref. 45335); pepojuba: Name 'pepojuba' from the Tupi-Guarani language (one of the original Brazilian people) meaning 'yellow fin', in reference to the bright yellow color of the dorsal and anal fins. A noun in apposition.

Wervels: 25. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: smooth, cycloid scales on top of head; predorsal scales rough, ctenoid; total number of developed gill rakers 17-21; 47-51 pored lateral-line scales; bright yellow dorsal and caudal fins; tip of lower jaw with very slight, shallow tiny knob, immediately followed by pore; and soft dorsal fin completely covered by scales (Ref. 138809).
