This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: smooth, cycloid scales on top of head; predorsal scales rough, ctenoid; total number of developed gill rakers 17-21; 47-51 pored lateral-line scales; bright yellow dorsal and caudal fins; tip of lower jaw with very slight, shallow tiny knob, immediately followed by pore; and soft dorsal fin completely covered by scales (Ref. 138809).
