Etymology: Diapoma: Greek, dis, dia = through + Greek, poma = cover (Ref. 45335); potamohadros: Name 'potamohadros' from the Greek words 'potamo' and 'hadros', meaning 'river' and 'big or bigger', in reference to Iguaçu River (Ref. 138957).

Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 8; Rayons mous anaux: 20 - 26. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: discontinuous perforation of lateral line scales; an unpigmented adipose fin; modified scales in the caudal fin absent; posterior elongation of opercular bones absent; distal border of the anal fin concave in males; number of scales forming the anal-fin sheath (5-12); number of branched anal-fin rays (20-26); body depth (27.6-31.9% SL); five or more cusps on the teeth in the inner series of premaxilla; longitudinal black stripe extending posteriorly on the middle caudal-fin rays; and conspicuous black blotch on the caudal-fin base absent (Ref. 138957).
